ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Texas A&M University–Texarkana softball battled throughout a tough non-conference doubleheader against NCAA Division II Henderson State on Tuesday, ultimately dropping both contests in competitive fashion.
In game one, the Eagles struck early and matched the Reddies hit-for-hit, finishing with eight hits on the afternoon. TAMUT got on the board in the opening inning as Brooke Usrey delivered an RBI single to score Kamryn Walker. Henderson State answered with a two-run home run in the bottom half, but the Eagles quickly responded in the second inning when Skyler Martin drove in Grace Cantu to even the score at 2-2.
The game remained tight until the fifth inning when Henderson State used a solo home run to take a 3-2 lead. Despite multiple baserunners late, the Eagles were unable to find the equalizer.
Kylie Malone and Madison Ruiz each recorded multi-hit performances, while Rylee Glenn went the distance in the circle, striking out eight.
In game two, Henderson State used a four-run third inning to create separation en route to a 6-2 decision.
The Eagles once again struck first, plating a run in the second inning behind an RBI single from Madison Haynes. After the Reddies responded with their big third inning, TAMUT answered in the fourth with a sacrifice fly from Haynes to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Victoria Clayton led the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate, while Malone added two hits. TAMUT finished with seven hits in the contest.
In the circle, Alexis Snyder took the loss, while Charli Miller and Sarah Phillips combined for 3.2 innings of relief.
The Eagles move to 28-10 overall and will look to bounce back as they return to conference play later this week as they host the no. 7 Saints of Our Lady of the Lake University for a three game series at Bramlett Field. First pitch is set for Friday, April 10 at 1 p.m.
