GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Texas A&M University–Texarkana softball team turned in a strong weekend at the Gulf Shores Invitational, finishing 3–1 with wins over (RV) Freed-Hardeman University, Thomas University, and William Woods University. The Eagles' final scheduled game against Central Methodist University was cancelled due to weather.
TAMUT opened the tournament with a dominant 12–1 victory over Freed-Hardeman. The Eagles used a massive eight-run fourth inning to pull away, highlighted by RBI hits from Walker, Williams, Schmidt, Cantu, Martin, and Clayton. Williams led the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate, collecting three singles and driving in two runs.
The Eagles finished with 13 hits in the game, with Schmidt, Clayton, and Martin each recording multiple hits. In the circle, Glenn earned the win after allowing just one run across four innings while striking out two. Miller added a scoreless inning of relief to close out the run-rule victory.
Later in the day, TAMUT continued its offensive surge with a 10–1 win over Thomas. After Thomas scored the game's first run in the opening inning, the Eagles responded in the third, taking the lead on an error that plated two runs before Cantu added an RBI triple.
The Eagles piled up 14 hits in the contest, led by Williams, who went 4-for-5 at the plate. Williams and Martin each drove in two runs, while Haynes added two hits. Benge earned the win in the circle, allowing just two hits and one run across four innings. Philips followed with three scoreless innings in relief to secure the victory.
On Saturday, TAMUT fell in a tightly contested matchup against University of Tennessee Southern, 5–2. The Eagles broke through first in the sixth inning when an error brought home a run, but Tennessee Southern responded with five runs in the top of the seventh to take control late.
Snyder delivered a strong outing in the circle, pitching 6.2 innings while allowing four runs on four hits and striking out two. Ruiz led the Eagles offensively with a 2-for-4 performance, while Clayton recorded an RBI.
The Eagles bounced back in their final completed game with an 11–0 run-rule victory over William Woods. Ruiz led the way with a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate, recording two singles and a double while driving in two runs.
TAMUT broke the game open with an eight-run fifth inning, highlighted by RBI hits from Ruiz, Cantu, Malone, Schmidt, and Yeager. The Eagles finished with 14 hits in the contest, while Humphrey added two RBIs from the eighth spot in the lineup.
Glenn was dominant in the circle, tossing five shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out six.
Softball will travel to San Antonio, Texas where they will continue Red River Athletic Conference action as they take on the Jaguars of A&M-San Antonio. They will play a double header on Friday, March 13th at 1 & 3:30 p.m. and a solo series finale on Saturday with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
