Indoor Track & Field Posts Strong Showing at Owen Hewitt Invitational
Norman, Okla. – The Texas A&M University–Texarkana track and field teams turned in strong performances at the Owen Hewitt Invitational, hosted by the University of Oklahoma, highlighted by multiple personal records and top-10 finishes. The Eagles faced a competitive field that included NCAA Division I programs such as Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Incarnate Word.
Ariyah Ford led the women's field events with a third-place finish in the Shot Put Open, tossing 12.34m. Ava Ferreira also earned a top-10 finish in the Weight Throw Open, placing seventh with a personal best of 12.04m, while teammate R'Naziah Johnson finished 16th with a mark of 8.20m. Janiya Ross cleared 1.55m in the High Jump Open to place sixth, marking a personal best. On the men's side, Darlington Onsarigo claimed fifth in the Triple Jump Invite with a personal best of 14.62m, and Dexter Lockett placed 16th in the Long Jump Open at 6.33m.
In the sprints, J'Layah Spellman Collins qualified for the Women's 60m Open finals with a prelim time of 8.14, ultimately placing 12th with 8.20 in the finals. Spellman Collins also ran an 8th-place finish in the 200m Open at 26.70, with teammate Damaria Bell following close behind in 10th at 26.90. Bell qualified for the 60m Hurdles Invite finals with a 10th-place prelim time of 9.0 and improved to an eighth-place finish with a mark of 8.98 in the finals.
Distance runners also made their mark, as Kayla Reeves set a personal best in the Women's Mile Invite, finishing fifth with a time of 5:36.29.
The Eagles will return to action at the FasTrak Athletic Collegiate Challenge hosted by the University of Houston on Saturday, January 24th.
