When Oluwafisayo Oduwole buried a penalty shot with five minutes to play, he did more than just pull A&M-Texarkana even with Jarvis Christian University on Thursday. That goal helped the Eagles earn a 1-1 tie and a point in the standings that clinches the programs' first Red River Athletic Conference tournament berth in three years.
The Eagles (8-8-1 overall, 6-5-1 RRAC) still have one more match in the regular season, but they now know they'll have something more to play for when November rolls around. Jarvis falls to 9-3-3-, 7-2-3. Thursday's result eliminates North American University, who now trail the Eagles by four points with one match to play and lost the head-to-head with TAMUT.
In a chippy contest that saw 10 yellow cards, one red card, and a combined 43 fouls, the two teams combined for 20 shots (10 apiece). The Bulldogs got on the board first with just 14 minutes off the first half clock.
Oduwole lined up a penalty kick and tied the contest at the 84:59 mark, his third goal of the season. Seth Brown made three saves in goal for the Eagles.
A&M-Texarkana hosts winless Texas College on Saturday for Senior Day at Morgan Field. The men's contest is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
