ALEXANDRIA, La. – Texas A&M University–Texarkana baseball went on the road and delivered when it mattered most.
Facing the No. 3 seed LSU Alexandria Generals in the opening round of the Red River Athletic Conference Baseball Championship, the Eagles secured a series victory, winning two of three games to punch their ticket to the final site.
"I am really proud of them, especially with how we've finished the regular season heading into the first round of the conference tournament," said head coach Chase Brewster. "We are playing well at the right time, going 17-3 in our last twenty games."
TAMUT opened the series with a gritty 5-4 win, rallying late behind a clutch performance from Brandon Sheets, who drove in three runs including a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning. Austin Kerns added a solo shot, while Ahmar Donatto led the offense with four hits. The Eagles' bullpen held firm down the stretch, with Donatto closing the door for the save.
Game two went to the Generals in a high-scoring contest, 16-5, as LSUA capitalized on early momentum despite multi-hit efforts from Sheets and James Provencio.
"There aren't enough words to describe the performances all weekend," Brewster said. "Ahmar (Donatto), Brandon (Sheets), Austin (Kerns) — really, there were so many who stepped up every day this weekend to give us a chance to advance to the final four in Sterlington."
With the series on the line, the Eagles responded in a big way in the rubber match, earning a 9-6 victory to clinch the series. TAMUT jumped out early behind home runs from Donatto and Michael Caputo and never looked back. Donatto finished with three hits and three runs scored, while Caputo added two hits and two RBI.
On the mound, Remi Rountree delivered a strong start, allowing just one run over six innings to set the tone.
"None of this happens without Remi (Rountree) setting the tone for six innings today," Brewster said. "It's never easy to ask a freshman to start a must-win game, but he grew up a lot this year along the way. He was phenomenal, and Matt (Hart) coming back on one day rest to close it out was incredible to watch."
Across the series, the Eagles totaled 24 runs on 32 hits, showcasing timely hitting and resilience in pressure moments to secure the upset.
With the win, TAMUT advances to the RRAC Championship final site, now set to be hosted on the campus of LSU Shreveport. The Eagles will face the LSU Shreveport Pilots on Friday, May 1 at 5 p.m.
