TEXARKANA, Texas — Texas A&M University–Texarkana baseball came up just short in a tightly contested midweek matchup, falling 3-2 to Wiley on Tuesday afternoon at George Dobson Field.
The Eagles broke through in the fourth inning when Tobin Jones ripped an RBI double down the left field line, scoring Ahmar Donatto to give TAMUT a 1-0 lead.
Behind a strong start from Colton Sims, the Eagles carried that lead into the sixth inning. Sims was dominant on the mound, tossing seven innings while allowing just two runs (one earned) and striking out nine.
Wiley capitalized on a pair of opportunities in the sixth to take a 2-1 advantage, but TAMUT answered in the seventh. Landon West delivered a triple and came around to score on a defensive miscue, tying the game at 2-2.
The Wildcats regained the lead in the eighth inning, using an RBI double to go back in front 3-2.
The Eagles threatened late, putting runners in scoring position in the ninth inning, but were unable to push across the tying run.
Jones led the offense with an RBI, while Donatto and West each scored a run. TAMUT finished with six hits on the day.
The Eagles now turn their attention to a big-time conference test, traveling to face No. 4 LSU Shreveport baseball for a three-game RRAC showdown. First pitch in Friday's opener is set for 6 p.m. as TAMUT looks to make a statement on the road.
